Newbus Grange Hospital in Darlington, part of the Danshell Group, is celebrating after receiving Autism Accreditation from the National Autistic Society.

The Accreditation Awarding Body Report said of Newbus Grange that it ‘works effectively with a complex group of autistic clients providing positive and proactive multi-disciplinary approaches in a person centred manner.’

Newbus Grange has demonstrated its commitment to understanding autism and that the hospital is setting the standard for autism practice. The endorsement demonstrates to commissioners, regulators, the people the hospital supports and their families, that the staff are dedicated to providing the best possible care and support.

Autism Accreditation is an internationally-recognised process of support and development for all those providing services to people with autism. It provides a structured framework and advisory support in order for the provision to reflect on its current practice and continue to develop in line with the latest thinking around working with people with autism.

The report commented that the Review Team was ‘impressed by the commitment to transition within the service’, noting an area of particular strength was in ‘involving parents and families in their care planning and transition planning.’

Hazel Southern, Manager at Newbus Grange, said: “To achieve Autism Accreditation is terrific news for all involved. This has been a summer of success for Newbus Grange, as we were also recently rated ‘Good’ in all areas from the Care Quality Commission, and received the AIMS-LD Quality Network for Inpatient Learning Disability Services (QNLD) accreditation from the Royal College of Psychiatrists.”

Mel Ramsey, Chief Executive of Danshell Group, said: “Newbus Grange goes from strength to strength and continues to provide equality care and an excellent service to the people we support. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the fantastic team at Newbus Grange. I am so proud of them all.”

Newbus Grange is an independent hospital providing specialist assessment and rehabilitation for men on the autistic spectrum with associated complex needs.
